Virginia Girls by Kalea Gates | AFTERWORD

2014 was when I met a girl. Her name was Mia, short girl, long curly hair, with a certain outlook on life.

There was a mutual friend but soon it was just us.

Me and Mia against the world.

We disconnected to soon found our ways back to each other, almost like destiny.

“Hey, what are you doing tonight?”, I would ask.

“In Virginia. Will be back next week”, she would respond.

She was always moving around, but the distance never made us any less close.

I love my Virginia Girl.

2023 is when I met the other girl. Her name was Casandra, short girl, long straight hair, and always knew the right things to say.

Soon it became the three of us.

Me, Mia, Casandra against the world.

Before I knew it, they were the only ones I wanted to hang out with.

Nothing was ‘TMI’ between us, matter of fact, it was all ‘must tell’. We would wake and bake then spark at dark whilst talking about the highs and lows of life.

Oh, I love my Virginia Girls.

2024 is when I had to say my goodbyes. They decided they wanted to pursue something different in their lives.

A change.

Sadness struck like a knife to the heart but, nonetheless, I was happy for them and could not wait for what the future had in store for Mia and Casandra.

“And y’all are sure about this?” I asked, standing in Mia’s empty house that was once filled with memories of us together.

That night the air was filled with bittersweetness as we rode windows down on 288 heading towards downtown. But there was one thing on my mind that night:

The love for my Virginia Girls.

That was the last time I ever saw them. The last time I felt their radiance, the angst of our worlds.

Every now and then, I do think of them.

Sometimes my vape tastes like those nights where we would talk and laugh till the crack of dawn.

We never ran out of things to say.

I’ll be here when they get back.

My love continues to grow for my Virginia Girls.
